"Undone" By Laura Sumner-Truax

Book Description:

Whether a big crisis shakes us or little things wear away at us, these are moments where we are confronted with ourselves. This is not the way that things are supposed to be. We feel like failures. We are undone. Worse yet, we realize that underneath our masks and facades, we are not the person we are pretending to be. Who are we, really? Laura Truax knows what it's like when life hits the fan. But she discovered that these times of exposure and vulnerability can become opportunities to find out who we really are and what we are meant to be. When we come to the end of ourselves, God can meet us there to help us face our fears, take off our masks and rediscover our true self as part of his larger story. Your journey isn't done. Come discover how you can become the person you long to be.

My Thoughts:

What happens when our lives fall apart? When everything we had hoped for moves from being a sparkle in our eye to a flow of tears? The reality is that in life, sometimes things will come undone. What we do with the experiencing of undoing and how we respond is crucial. In my friend Laura Sumner Truax’s new (and first!) book Undone, we are taken on a journey through her own personal stories of loss, pain, and undoing and are shown how God so often steps in and redeems the fragments of our broken lives into a story better than we could have ever imagined.

In one sense, this book as a “Christian-livingy” flavor to it. I normally am not a fan of that genre. But Undone is far from a stereotypical Christian “self-help” guide. Instead, Undone seems really to be more of a series of stories that Laura invites us to step into that can help transform our perspective and open us up to the healing and redemption that God offers to us. Laura is a witty and yet deep writer and this book has the potential to cause laughter and tears, culminating in a profound feeling of hope. Hope that “though the sorrows last for the night, joy comes in the morning.” What also surprised me was just how biblical this book was. Every chapter is chock-full of scriptural references and stories to go along with the lessons Laura highlights from her own life. Laura pairs nearly every story in her book with a Biblical example and points us to the reality that God uses messed up people and that we are not abandoned or alone in our pain and fears.

Overall, Undone is a profoundly practical book. The instruction Laura gives is rooted in the Gospel of Jesus. The stories are raw, vulnerable, and real. And the writing is incredibly relatable. This is one of those books that I feel like I could recommend to just about anyone and they would be profoundly benefited from interacting with this book. And I am not just saying that because I am a fan of Laura! This book really has the power to speak into people’s lives and lead them from places of despair and depression to hope and healing. What more could you want from a book?

With that said, I give Undone: When Coming Apart Puts You Back Together Again by Laura Sumner-Truax (from Inter-Varsity Press) a 4.5 out of 5 Stars!
