"Better" by Tim Chaddick

About the Book:

In Better, Tim Chaddick explores the ancient book of Ecclesiastes for readers who ask, "What does it take to find satisfaction? Will I ever find something in life that's better than this?"

Most people live a life they never would have planned. The good news is that coming to the end of their expectations means they're on the brink of great wisdom, peace, and joy. That's what the ancient author of Ecclesiastes helps us figure out-it is quite possible to face detours in life and still find more satisfaction than you ever could have imagined.

Better explores the mysteries, scandalous lines, and deep truths of Ecclesiastes and applies them to life today. Better asks the questions that are on readers' hearts today-and points to answers from the heart of God. Here readers will find a vision of life that is neither naive nor cynical, but realistic and hopeful. Because the truth is, when God answers the questions, it always gets better.

My Thoughts:

Sometimes it feels like Jesus simply doesn't satisfy. At the very least, it seems that Jesus falls far beyond our expectations. It is these feelings that Pastor Tim Chaddick addresses head on in his new book "Better: How Jesus Satisfies the Search For Meaning". This book initially comes across as a typical "Christian Living" type book that makes huge claims about helping you change your life and then not ever coming close to following through. But the wisdom and insights of Pastor Chaddick in this book make it very different. Through personal stories, biblical examples, and practical exposition of Ecclesiastes, Chaddick has created a resource that goes far beyond cliche into creating a book that actually has power to be transformative in each readers life.

The book is divided into three main sections: "Aspirations", "Assets", and "Attitudes". Each of these sections deal with reasons why we may find ourselves discontented in life and offers practical wisdom and biblical teaching to help correct our thinking and posture to receive fulfillment from God in every circumstance in our lives. Chaddicks biggest strength is his practicality- there is no one who could not relate to the circumstances and illustrations used in this book. The fact that Chaddick is able to make perhaps one of the most difficult and depressing books in the Bible- Ecclesiastes- practical and inspiring shows that he is certainly an able teacher of God's word. If you've ever wondered how to interpret Ecclesiates as a Christian, this book gives you one great example.

My only criticism of this book is that it is very surface level. Though the teachings and insights of Chaddick are helpful, they don't really do justice to the magnitude of suffering and emptiness that many people often feel. Though the book offers truth, it doesn't really offer strategies in which that truth can effect us on a truly individual level. If someone is looking for a pick-me-up book after a difficult season, this resource would be immensely helpful. If, however, one finds themselves in the midst of a crisis and is looking for direction, this book may not be the best fit.

Overall, Tim Chaddick has created a resource that I think will prove to be very helpful to many Christians who are trying to understand the sense of longing and emptiness that they often feel inside. But beyond that general audience, this book may not have much to say of great depth to others lives and struggles. With all of that said...

I give "Better" by Tim Chaddick a 3.5 out of 5 Stars!
